What was your first bike

Mine was a Honda MB5 back in 1984. I loved that bike and was never off it. I'd just started off my apprenticeship, so the money was pretty crap but every spare penny I had, went on fixing it up. I did all sorts to try and make it faster, expansion chamber, porting the exhaust, extra tooth on the front sprocket and hy-tech reeds. Then late one night I got a puncture and left it at a 24hr petrol station and made my way home. When I got back to pick it up, some git had moved it round the back and stripped everything off it.
I got the insurance money but it didn't make up for the loss of the bike. When I look back at it, it was still as rough as a badger, even though I tried to fix it up. Still, I had as much fun on that bike as any I've owned since.
So what was the first bike, which got you into biking.

I'm was a relative newcomer to bikes, 2 yars ago, at age 24.
First bike I owned was a Suzuki SV650S, in dark blue. A great bike, except for soggy forks and a tendency for the front cylinder to flood when there was standing water (Making it a 325cc single).
First bike ride was on a Yamaha SR125, a little custom style thing, and it's fat tyred cousin, the TW125.
Then a shot of a CB500 and finally a Fazer 600 for my test.
Still remember heading out of London towards Southend on the SR125, nudging 65mph with the crosswinds nearly changing lanes for me. Ah, heady days.

The SRs have been kicking about for quite a few years now. Its another one of those bikes which changes very little of a number of years but still manages to be a good seller.
I knew a bloke who had one back in 1983.

Strange forces are at work here. My first bike was a MB5. It was black and I added some rather tasteful gold embellishments in a sort of JPS style. I thought it looked the knackers but I dread to think what it REALLY looked like. I went all over the place on that bike and often with my mate on the back. It could barely hit thirty two up but could just scrape fourty solo. Curiously enough, it has the rather unfortunate acolade of being the first bike i ever crashed! The evening that I bought it (£75) and rode it home, two miles, it was raining and the MB had no petrol. I spotted a petrol station off the hatfield road in Fleetville and signalled right to pull into it. Then I managed to lock the front wheel and slid to the ground. I remember for about a year I never used the front brake at all as I was convinced it would lock up again.

Yamaha FS1-E back in 1973 before progressing on my 17th birthday to the mighty Honda CD175 complete with fully enclosed chainguard.
Then I went GT380, CB500/4, CB750/4, and the list becomes pretty meaningless.

I got my DT100 in 1980. My mates had a FS1E, XR100 (or was it XT100?), and another DT100. We used to tool down to Hayling Island (from Reading), and whizz around the dunes.
My DT was the fastest of the bunch, able to reach the dizzy heights of 65! I didn't know it at the time, but it probably never had a working 2-stroke pump. Apparently, they regularly packed-up, but because the oil tank was only just under the fuel tank, it was able to gravity feed, just! Consequently my bike used to sieze from time to time. No warning, just a lock-up at the back and a lot of blue smoke. Had to look lively with the clutch
I binned it after a year and never got back on a bike until 22 years later

Hands across the sea, bro..
I feel off the MB before I even got it on the road. I was made to do a week of practising before I got on the road. I just rode around the car park at the back of my old dear's house. Lost the front end once on gravel and once taking it back into the garden, when it was raining. I have improved a bit since then.

I actually put it into the side of a car which had pulled out on me. I came out ok - very, very lucky. Bike and car were written off. It put the frighteners on me, plus I had no spare cash to get another bike. I started to learn to drive after that. I had also just joined a band and that took all my spare cash for the next 10 years, plus we needed the transport for the amps and stuff. Just sort of forgot about bikes - bit sad really
I decided to take the bike test earlier this year thanks to my wife, who's very encouraging. I decided to go for it as a kind of birthday pressie/alternative and fun mode of transport. Did me DAS...
My wife was dead keen to pillion at first but as it happens, shes not so keen now - because of her 'condition'

lets see, first bike i owned was a trusty ol honda cg125 when i was about 14, off road only u understand
then at the age of 16 i bought a rd50, could do 45 downhill!
then at 17 i bought a brand new yamaha tzr125 only for the counterbalance shaft to go after about 100miles so they gave me another new one!
after passing my test i got a zzr250, followed by a zzr600, which i almost wrote off when the front brake caliper bolt sheared and the caliper spun round locking the front wheel solid! Ended up with one sorry looking bike and me with 2 cracked ribs
put me off bikes for a while but about 3 years ago i bought a rgv250 that coughed out smoke everywhere! when it got too expensive to keep rebuilding i got a sv650s in red which i still have, great bike that i would recomend to anyone!
Now im thinking on whether in the spring to change it for a new sv650 with fuel injection or a new sv1000 ( ouuu mumma!)
oh btw, ive also got 3 bsa's that i share with my dad, bsa500 gold star, bsa 500 A7, and bsa 350 B31

My dad just gave his A10 Gold Flash to his brother, who also has an Ariel Leader.
It took a while to get used to haveing the foot controls on opposite sides to what I was used to, but I enjoyed the sound of the old Beeza, but remembered to plan braking well in advance.

I met an old chap with an A10 last week. It was at the bikesafe meet. He was asking, if he could go on the assessed ride with his sidecar fitted.
All credit to the man for still wanting to improve his riding, I he was didgy, I don't think he woud have made it to his ripe old age in the first place.
Essexbiker, It seems everybody who owns an SV raves about them. Think Scotty's complaint is the first one, I've ever read. I can see his point about the front cylinder though. Maybe I'll get to try one some day.

front cylinder cutting out in heavy rain is common with sv's , water just gets into the ht cap on the spark plug and causes it to cut out. As soon as the water evaporates with the heat your back on 2 cylinders again ! Ive never had it happen, but ive heard of it. Some people fit marine grade spark plug caps which are more resistant to the problems. But saying that i dont go out much in the wet if i can help it!
